Recently I spoke with several of my wholesalers as well as with other vendors...asked them if they thought that cross stitch was 'coming back in fashion'. They felt that it was.

In the mid to late 80's, in the larger populated areas, there was a die-down of cross stitch as a medium in the craft area. This went hand in hand with crewel embroidery, and many other types of crafts. Sales went down dramtically for the publishers as well as for the designers and for decades, they didn't see even a fraction of the salses they had once earned early in the 80's.

Now, it seems that the craft is once again making an appearance though not as strong as they had hoped it would be and not as powerful as it was in the 80's.

I have not personally seen a lot of crewel embroidery. The bulk of the sewing crafts appear to be the much easier to work cross stitch. The kits and patterns employ a much simpler and easier to work DMC floss and not the heavier and more expensive woolen embroidery threads.

However, there do appear to be beautiful brazilian embroidery kits, books and information on the market which, while not as popular, is seeing some interest along with a few other gorgeous sewing mediums.

With Wal-Mart now removing crafts and the sewing departments from so many of their major, and even smaller stores,. the many mom and pops that once went out of business because of the montrous crushing retail giant might now have a chance to once again compete by offering the new, the unusual and the unique. In short, the very things that Wal-mart does NOT carry!

Finally, these beautiful crafts may once again see a resurgance...Is cross stitch coming back? I say yes...along with many other wonderful handcrafts. And it's finally about time :)
